Dry needling is an approach that physical therapists are beginning to utilize in the treatment of common orthopaedic diagnoses including chronic conditions, acute traumas, and sport related injuries. It is proving to be a great addition to other treatments to expedite healing.
How is dry needling different from acupuncture?
Although dry needling uses the same needles as those used in acupuncture, they are two separate techniques with different uses and underlying principles.
For example, acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese medicine involving the flow of energy through the body and the use of ‘meridian points’.
Dry needling however, is developed from present day Western medicine incorporating foundations of anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience.
“After years of chronic back pain, I was excited to try dry needling. I definitely felt some immediate relief and welcomed it into my PT program.”
